Perspectives on Criminal Justice Through Art

A few weeks ago, SJS hosted our first art night of the year in MGC. Board members, club members, and new faces came together to express thoughts and perspectives on criminal justice reform through a variety of artistic mediums.

Coloring sheets, newspapers and paints were provided, and personal projects included (but were by no means limited to): collages on the social justice movement, vision boards on the future of justice, messages of love and support, SJS unity / pride, and even a new potential mascot.

Students were not only able to express and discuss feelings on criminal justice reformation, but also meet new members and relieve some pressure from school through expressing thoughts in less typically accepted forms of creativity.

Speaking on the significance of this event, SJS President Anna Gephart notes, “We want to make sure we have a community and time to rest and relax. There is work that needs to be done and we know we can always do more, but we wanted to use this night to come together, express our thoughts, and make our own little community, because we know we can tackle the challenges better together.”

Understanding that everyone is at a different capacity for what they can bring each day is something that SJS works to normalize and promote. We hope you’ll join us for the events you have the ability to attend, so we can continue to work, uplift, and care for one another.

For everyone who was able to make it out to this event, thank you for coming and sharing your time and creativity! For those who weren’t able, we hope you’ll join us at our next in-person event!
