SJS and AU's Freedom Fund: Supporting Black, international, and undocumented communities

As part of the Freedom Fund, Students for a Just Society will be partnering with the AU Black Caucus Committee and 20 other AU organizations to raise money for the Black Women’s Health Imperative, Young Center for Immigrant Children’s Rights, and Sanctuary DMV. Each AU organization participating in the Freedom Fund will create an educational social media post regarding issues faced by Black, international, and undocumented individuals. They will have 24 hours to raise as much money as possible, and the organizations that raise the most funds for these worthy causes will be announced at the end of the campaign. Students for a Just Society will be posting on our social media on August 13th, 2020, and those wishing to donate in SJS’s name should Venmo @aufreedomfund using the phrase “Students for a Just Society'' so the Black Caucus knows who sent you. All funds raised will be split three ways between the Black Women’s Health Imperative, Young Center for Immigrant Children’s Rights, and Sanctuary DMV.

Here is some background information on each of the organizations we are raising money for through the Freedom Fund (provided by the AU Black Caucus Committee):

Black Women’s Health Imperative wishes to lead the effort to solve the most

pressing health issues that affect Black women and girls in the U.S. Through

investments in evidence-based strategies, they deliver bold new programs and

advocate for health-promoting policies. The Imperative instituted aggressive national programs in health policy, education, research, knowledge and leadership development and communications to save and extend the lives of Black women. Presently, the organization continues to be dedicated to promoting physical, mental, and spiritual health and well-being for the nation’s 19.5 million African American women and girls.

The Young Center is a human rights organization that advocates for the rights an best interests of immigrant children. Young Center attorneys and social workers,

along with bilingual volunteers, are appointed as Child Advocates (guardian ad litem) by the Department of Health and Human Services. Their role is to advocate for their best interests—from custody and release to the ultimate decision about whether the child will be allowed to remain in the U.S. Their goal is to change both immigration policy and practice so that immigrant children are recognized first as children and their best interests are considered in every decision.

Sanctuary DMV is a feminist, anti-imperialist, all-volunteer group standing in

solidarity with immigrants and marginalized communities in the DMV area (DC,

Maryland, and Virginia). They resist policies and policy proposals that target and aim to deport millions of undocumented immigrants and discriminate against Black, Indigenous, Muslim, Latinx, and LGBTQ+ people.

We hope to see many of our members, followers, and supporters participate in this campaign to advocate alongside AU’s Black, international, and undocumented communities. We are looking forward to this event, and we hope you are too.
